Tools and Hardware Reviews of Werner S2208 8-Foot 300-Pound Duty Rating Steel Easy Access Attic LadderCustomer Review: My wife and I installed it (as a replacement) easily; Thumbs up. Summary: 5 StarsPicked it up locally for $119 (down from $159), so I suspect the price will be dropping on this site, too, at some point.
We replaced a rickety old wooden set that I was never comfortable climbing. Took the old one out and the existing hole needed no work. 22 1/2 by 54, I think. The instructions were easy to follow and all the parts (even some extras) were there.
I popped the new frame in and had to do the shim thing on the sides. I'm not sure what the big deal was for previous reviewers re shimming. As instructed, I took some scrap wood and screwed two cross-pieces up under the joists. The frame sits on those while you shim and square the frame. (I had to account for the 1/2" ceiling; I put some 1/2" wood scraps on the crosspieces to raise the frame to be flush with the bottom of the joists.)
Frankly, I shimmed and measured for square until I got tired of it and started screwing in the lag screws. After a couple of those, I measured again and it looked good (or at least "good enough for me.") I crossed my fingers and screwed in the rest of the lag screws.
Once the frame is up, the installation is a breeze. It's better to have a helper, but I could have done it solo. You hook the stairs to the frame and the whole thing just hangs there while you connect it to the frame with just more 4 nuts (the two struts and two posts). Really, it could not have been easier.
I stuck the extenders on the feet and screwed them in place, put 4 more nuts on to hold the bottom steps in place and we were done.
The thing lifted up with ease and it was nearly perfect. (I was off a little with the squaring, but it made no difference; it closed perfectly even if it's a smidge -- 1/2" maybe -- more to one side at one end.)
The whole project took less than 3 hours (including removing the old stairs) and I was moving pretty slowly to be honest. Now that I know what to do, if I were to do another (replacement) installation, I bet I could do it in an hour.
I'm sure it's quite sturdy load-wise, but it's still an attic ladder and it feels somewhat shakey. That's to be expected, so don't think you'll be running up these stairs with your arms full of Christmas decorations.
So I feel that the product is as good as advertised, the installation was pretty easy and, therefore, I recommend it. Especially if you get it for $119.
